Περί πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας και ελεύθερης ανταλλαγής αρχείων

To cine-lez μπλογκ καταθέτει τις απόψεις του ευρωβουλευτή των Πειρατών, αφουγκράζοντας τις εξελίξεις των επόμενων εβρομάδων. Μετά την κινηματογραφική σύλληψη του ιδρυτή του Megaupload, οι περισσότεροι host (και η Filesonic) κλείσαν την ανταλλαγή αρχείων μεταξύ των χρηστών. Όποιες ταινίες ζητηθούν απο τους μπλόγκερ του cine-lez, θα ψάξω να τις βρώ με μορφή torrent, ώστε να κρατηθεί ζωντανή η προσπάθεια μας για αφύπνιση (κοινώς ξεστράβωμα) των απανταχού λεσβιών!

Ο ευρωβουλευτής των Πειρατών Christian Engström, καταθέτει παρακάτω τις απόψεις του για την ελεύθερη διακίνηση μουσικών αρχείων με αφορμή την οδηγία IPRED (Intellectual Property Rights Directive), που δίνει το δικαίωμα στους κατόχους του copyright να απαιτήσουν από τους διακομιστές (ISP) τα στοιχεία των πελατών τους που μοιράζουν παράνομα αρχεία.

Η ελεύθερη ανταλλαγή μουσικών αρχείων δεν ζημιώνει τους καλλιτέχνες αλλά τις πολυεθνικές, καθώς είναι ελεύθερη πρόσβαση στον πολιτισμό με σημαντικά οφέλη για την κοινωνία.
Η νομοθεσία περί πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας μετατρέπει τα νέα παιδιά σε εγκληματίες
Η σημερινή νομοθεσία περί πνευματικής ιδιοκτησιαςείναι εκτός ισορροπίας και σε δυσαρμονία με την εποχή. Έχει μετατρέψει το σύνολο της νέας γενιάς σε εγκληματίες στα μάτια του νόμου, σε μια μάταιη προσπάθεια να σταματήσει την τεχνολογική ανάπτυξη. Ωστόσο, η ανταλλαγή αρχείων συνεχίζει να αυξάνει με γεωμετρική πρόοδο. Ούτε η προπαγάνδα, ούτε οι τακτικές φόβου, ούτε η σκληρότερη νομοθεσία είναι σε θέση να σταματήσουν αυτή την εξέλιξη.
Είναι αδύνατο να επιβληθεί η απαγόρευση της μη κερδοσκοπικής ανταλλαγής αρχείων χωρίς να παραβιάζονται θεμελιώδη δικαιώματα.Εφ' όσον υπάρχουν τρόποι για τους πολίτες να επικοινωνούν ιδιωτικά, αυτοί θα χρησιμοποιούνται για να ανταλλάσσονταιαρχεία με πνευματικά δικαιώματα. Ο μόνος τρόπος να περιοριστεί, ακόμα και ως προσπάθεια, η ανταλλαγή αρχείων είναι η αφαίρεση του δικαίωματος στην ελεύθερη ιδιωτική επικοινωνία. Κατά την τελευταία δεκαετία, η νομοθεσία περί πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας έχει οδηγηθεί προς αυτή τη κατεύθυνση, υπό την πίεση των μεγάλων επιχειρηματικών λόμπυ που βλέπουν τα μονοπώλιά τους να απειλούνται. Πρέπει να αντιστρέψουμε αυτή την τάση, προκειμένου να διασφαλίσουμε τα θεμελιώδη δικαιώματα των χρηστών.
Την ίδια στιγμή, θέλουμε μια κοινωνία όπου ανθεί ο πολιτισμός, όπου καλλιτέχνες και δημιουργοί έχουν την ευκαιρία να εξασφαλίσουν τα προς το ζειν, όνταςεργαζομένοι στον πολιτιστικό τομέα. Ευτυχώς, δεν υπάρχει καμία αντίφαση ανάμεσα στηνελεύθερη ανταλλαγή αρχείων και τον βιοπορισμό από τον πολιτισμό. Αυτό είναι κάτι που γνωρίζουμε μετά από δεκαετή εμπειρία μαζικής ανταλλαγής αρχείων στο Διαδίκτυο.
Σε οικονομικές στατιστικές μελέτες, μπορούμε να δούμε ότι οι δαπάνες των νοικοκυριών για τον πολιτισμό και την ψυχαγωγία αυξάνουν αργά αλλά σταθερά, χρόνο με το χρόνο. Αν ξοδεύουμε λιγότερα χρήματα για την αγορά CD, θα ξοδεύουμε περισσότερα χρήματα για κάτι άλλο, π.χ.για συναυλίες. Αυτό είναι σπουδαία είδηση για τους καλλιτέχνες. Ένας καλλιτέχνης θα πάρει συνήθως 5-7% των εσόδων από την πώληση ενός CD, αλλά εώς και το 50% των εσόδων από μια συναυλία. Οι δισκογραφικές εταιρείες χάνουν έτσι, αλλάαυτό συμβαίνει επειδή πλέον δεν προσφέρουνκαμία προστιθέμενη αξία.
Είναι πολύ πιθανό ότι θα γίνει πιο δύσκολο να κερδηθούν χρήματα σε ορισμένουςκλάδους του πολιτιστικού τομέα, αλλά ακόμα και έτσι θα γίνει ευκολότερο σε κάποιους άλλους, συμπεριλαμβανομένων κάποιων καινούριων τους οποίους δεν έχουμε καν φανταστεί ακόμη. Αλλά εφ 'όσον η συνολική δαπάνη των νοικοκυριών για τον πολιτισμό συνεχίζει να είναι στο ίδιο επίπεδο ή ακόμη και να αυξάνει, κανείς δεν μπορεί να ισχυριστεί ότι οι καλλιτέχνες ως κοινωνική ομάδα θα χάσουν από μια μεταρρύθμιση του νόμου περί πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας.
Σε περίπτωση μάλιστα που αυτό έχει σαν αποτέλεσματη χαλάρωση της ασφυκτικής πίεσης που επιβάλουν οι μεγάλοι διανομείς (σ.μ. πολυεθνικές εταιρίες) πάνω στην πολιτιστική ζωή, τότε τόσο το καλύτερο για τους καλλιτέχνες και τους καταναλωτές.
Όταν εμφανίστηκαν στην Ευρώπη οι δημόσιες βιβλιοθήκες, πριν από 150 χρόνια, οι εκδότες βιβλίων ήταν κάθετα αντίθετοι με αυτό.Το επιχείρημα που χρησιμοποιούσαντότε είναι το ίδιο με αυτό που χρησιμοποιείται σήμερα στη συζήτηση για την (ελεύθερη)ανταλλαγή αρχείων: Εάν οι άνθρωποι μπορούν να έχουν πρόσβαση σε δωρεάν βιβλία, οι συγγραφείς δεν θα είναι σε θέση να βγάζουν τα προς το ζην, άρα δεν θα γράφονται καθόλου καινούρια βιβλία.
Σήμερα γνωρίζουμε ότι αυτό το επιχείρημα κατά των δημόσιων βιβλιοθηκών ήταν λάθος. Είναι προφανές ότι αυτό δεν οδήγησε σε μια κατάσταση όπου δεν γράφτηκαν καινούργια βιβλία και δεν κατέστη αδύνατο στους δημιουργούς να κερδίσουν χρήματα από τη συγγραφή τους. Αντιθέτως αποδείχθηκε ότι η ελεύθερη πρόσβαση στον πολιτισμό προσφέρει όχι μόνο κοινωνικά οφέλη, αλλά είναι και επικερδής για τους ίδιους τους συγγραφείς.
Το διαδίκτυο είναι η πιο εκπληκτική δημόσια βιβλιοθήκη που έχει δημιουργηθεί ποτέ. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι όλοι, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των ατόμων με περιορισμένα οικονομικά μέσα, έχουν πρόσβαση σε όλες τις κουλτούρες του κόσμου με ένα μόλις κλικ. Αυτή είναι μια θετική εξέλιξη που θα πρέπει να αγκαλιάσουμε και να επικροτήσουμε.
Ακολουθούν μερικές συνδέσεις με άρθρα στα οποία συνοψίζεται η ακαδημαϊκή έρευνα για τον τρόπο με τον οποίο ο πολιτιστικός τομέας, συμπεριλαμβανομένηςτης μουσικής βιομηχανίας, τα έχει καταφέρει στην εποχή της ελεύθερης ανταλλαγής αρχείων.
Κατ' αρχήν, τρεις μελέτες για τη μουσική βιομηχανίααπόδιαφορετικά κράτη μέλη:
Σουηδία 2000 - 2008: Περισσότερες ενδείξεις τις οποίες οι δισκογραφικές εταιρείες δεν θέλουν να δείτε: Οι Σουηδοί μουσικοί κερδίζουν περισσότερα χρήματα

Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο 2004 - 2008: Οι δισκογραφικές εταιρείες χάνουν, οι καλλιτέχνες κερδίζουν από την ανταλλαγή αρχείων
Οι τρεις μελέτες παρουσιάζουν την ίδια εικόνα: Τα έσοδα για τις δισκογραφικές εταιρείες έχουν μειωθεί περίπου στο μισό κατά την τελευταία δεκαετία, αλλά την ίδια στιγμή, τα έσοδα των καλλιτεχνών έχουν αυξηθεί. Οι παραπάνω συνδέσεις παραπέμπουν σε σύντομα άρθρα που συνοψίζουν τις μελέτες, αλλά το κάθε άρθρο εμπεριέχει επιπλέον συνδέσεις και πηγές.
Ένα άρθρο του Economist από πέρυσι, με τίτλο "Τι πάει καλά στη μουσική", αναφέρει μελέτες από διάφορες χώρες, και καταλήγει στο συμπέρασμα ότι αν και οι πωλήσεις δίσκων έχουν μειωθεί, τα έσοδα από τις ζωντανές εμφανίσεις έχουν αυξηθεί σημαντικά, με τρόπο που αντισταθμίζει κατά πολύ την πτώση των πωλήσεων της ηχογραφημένης μουσικής.
Η Ολλανδική μελέτη ‘Τα πάνω και τα κάτω - οι οικονομικές και πολιτιστικές επιπτώσεις της ανταλλαγής αρχείων μουσικής, ταινιών και παιχνιδιών (2009)” παρουσιάζει μια εμπεριστατωμένη ανάλυση σε διάφορους πολιτιστικούς τομείς. Αποδεικνύειότι μεταξύ 1999 και 2007, τα έσοδα έχουν αυξηθεί για όλουςτους τομείς, εκτός από τις μουσικές ηχογραφήσεις. Όσο αφορά τη μουσική βιομηχανία, η μελέτη εξετάζει μόνο την ηχογραφημένη μουσική και δεν εξετάζει τα έσοδα για τους καλλιτέχνες από άλλες πηγές, όπως οι συναυλίες. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι η μελέτη επιβεβαιώνει την αρνητική τάση των μουσικών ηχογραφήσεων, όπως φαίνεται και στις παραπάνω σουηδικές, νορβηγικές και αγγλικές μελέτες, αλλά αφήνει εκτός του πεδίου εφαρμογής της το τμήμα του μουσικού τομέα που έχει τα περισσότερα κέρδη.
Μια μελέτη του Χάρβαρντ από το 2009 ρίχνει μια ματιά στις ευρύτερες επιπτώσεις της ανταλλαγής αρχείων στην κοινωνία και διαπιστώνει ότι από τότε που ξεκίνησε η ελεύθερη ανταλλαγή αρχείων, τόσο ο αριθμός των άλμπουμ μουσικής όσο και των ταινιών που κυκλοφόρησαν ανά έτος έχουν αυξηθεί. Ο καναδός καθηγητής Νομικής Michael Geist συνοψίζει την μελέτη στο άρθρο «Μελέτη του Χάρβαρντ βρίσκει ότι η ασθενέστερη προστασία των πνευματικών δικαιωμάτων έχει ευεργετήσει την κοινωνία».
Πριν από δέκα χρόνια, όταν η ελεύθερη ανταλλαγή αρχείων σε μαζική κλίμακα στο διαδίκτυο ήταν ένα σχετικά νέο φαινόμενο (το Napster κυκλοφόρησε το 1999), δεν ήταν καθόλου αυτονόητο εάν και με ποιο τρόπο ο πολιτιστικός τομέας θα μπορούσε να επιβιώσει οικονομικά στη νέα εποχή. Αλλά τώρα έχουμε πάνω από μια δεκαετία εμπειρίας σε έναν κόσμο όπου όποιος θέλει μπορεί να κατεβάσει ότι θέλει δωρεάν, και όπου μια μεγάλη μερίδα του πληθυσμού το κάνει συνέχεια.
Σήμερα γνωρίζουμε πλέον από αυτή τη πολυετή εμπειρία ότι ο πολιτιστικός τομέας είναι οικονομικά βιώσιμος, παρά την ανεξέλεγκτη ανταλλαγήαρχείων μέσω ομότιμων δικτύων (peer-to-peer). Αυτό που μπορεί να είχε εμφανιστεί ως ένα άλυτο πρόβλημα πριν από μια δεκαετία, σήμερα έχει αποδειχθεί ότι δεν είναι καθόλου πρόβλημα, αλλά στην πραγματικότητα είναι μια τεράστια ευκαιρία για τους καλλιτέχνες και τους δημιουργούς, καθώς και ένα εργαλείο για την ανάπτυξη μιας βιώσιμης πολιτιστικής ποικιλομορφίας.
Είναι δύσκολο ακόμα και σήμερα ένας καλλιτέχνης να βγάλει τα προς το ζειν από την Τέχνη του, όπως ήταν πάντα, και όπως θα είναι πάντα. Αλλά τουλάχιστον έχει γίνει λίγο πιο εύκολο σήμερα από ότι ήταν πριν την εποχή του διαδικτύου και της ελεύθερης ανταλλαγής αρχείων. Στη μουσική βιομηχανία, τα συνολικά έσοδα αυξήθηκαν ελαφρά, ενώ οι μεγάλες δισκογραφικές εταιρίες παίρνουν ένα μικρότερο κομμάτι της πίτας. Αυτό αφήνει περισσότερα χρήματα στουςδημιουργούς της μουσικής (αντί για τους διανομείς της).
Η ελεύθερη ανταλλαγή αρχείων δεν είναι ένα πρόβλημα που πρέπει να λυθεί. Είναι κάτι θετικό τόσο για τους καλλιτέχνες, όσο και για τους καταναλωτές και την κοινωνία στο σύνολό της. Αυτό που πρέπει να κάνουμε τώρα είναι να εναρμονίσουμε την νομοθεσία περί πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας με αυτή τη νέα, ελπιδοφόρα, πραγματικότητα.
Μεμια μεταρρύθμιση του νόμου περί πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίαςπου θα νομιμοποιεί την ελεύθερη, μη εμπορική/ μη κερδοσκοπική, ανταλλαγή αρχείων μέσω ομότιμων δικτύων (p2p), μπορούμε να βάλουμε ένα τέλος στην ποινικοποίηση μιας ολόκληρης γενιάς, ενώ την ίδια στιγμή θα βελτίωσουμε τις συνθήκες για ένα πιο ζωντανό πολιτιστικό τομέα στην Ευρώπη. On Friday, we noted some of the troubling parts of the Megaupload indictment, and how many perfectly legitimate companies did many of the same things that the US government used to suggest that Mega was a evil criminal conspiracy.

By Sunday, reports started spreading of other companies that provide useful services to people who want to legitimately share files… shutting down or limiting those services. For example, FileSonic — one of the most popular cyberlockers — has basically killed itself by no longer allowing sharing, and only allowing personal backup.

We are against all this intimidation and we find it incompatible with fundamental rights! In the next weeks, as cine-lez blog is going to wait for the developements at this domain, we will post any from the existing movies requested through torrents found online.

ACTA is Borderline on Fundamental Rights — At Best

Yesterday in the Legal Affairs Committee JURI in the European Parliament, we had an exchange of views on the ACTA agreement. Last week we got a Legal Opinion on ACTA, and in particular its compatibility with European fundamental rights, from the parliament’s Legal Service. This was the background for the discussion.
The first one to speak was French MEP Marielle Gallo, who is the rapporteur for the report that the JURI committee will be writing, and who is very much in favor of ACTA.
Then it was my turn. This is what I said when I was given the floor:

Thank you.
First of all, I’d like to thank the Committee for the decision yesterday to make the Legal Opinion public. I think that was a very good and very sensible decision, and as the chairman pointed out, it is compatible not only with the Cashman report, but also with the Turcu case from the ECJ. So that is a very good thing.
Then, looking at this Legal Opinion, I think it is a very interesting Opinion, because it confirms many of the concerns that we have raised about the ACTA agreement, and in particular whether it is compatible with fundamental rights in the European Union and elsewhere in the world.
If we look at paragraph 40 of the Legal Opinion, the language is extremely guarded in this Opinion. It says in subparagraph (d):
”It appears that the Agreement per se does not impose any obligation on the Union that is manifestly incompatible with fundamental rights.”
Now, if I ever listened to guarded legal language, that was it.
And the Opinion as a whole explains why it is, quite rightly, so guarded. It points out that very, very much depends on how this treaty is actually implemented in Member State laws or in Directives.
For instance, the issue of proportionality is very important, and is a fundamental right. All laws, and all punishments etc., have to be proportionate.
According to the ACTA agreement, if somebody does make illegal copies and downloads things illegally, damages should be calculated on the retail price or market value.
Now, as an example: A two-terabyte disk can hold roughly half a million songs. If you calculate that, at the market price of 1 euro per song, which is quite normal, then the damages for having a 2 TB disk full of music would be half a million euro.
Would that be proportionate or not? This is not an extreme example, this is something that lots of teenagers do. Is it really proportionate that the family would have to sell their house and all their possessions if they were found out?
This Legal Opinion seems to be of the opinion that ”well, yes, perhaps it could be”. The lawyers who wrote the Assessment of ACTA for the INTA Committee in June this year, were of the opposite opinion. They said that this raises real concerns about whether it is proportionate or not.
Like I said in the beginning, we can see from the language of the Legal Opinion that the ACTA agreement is at the very least borderline when it comes to respecting fundamental rights. And here we have a case where we have opposing opinions, from quite serious and qualified lawyers on both sides.
The ones who wrote the INTA Assessment are saying that ”no,this is probably not proportionate”, whereas the Legal Service is suggesting that ”maybe it is”.
I think this strengthens the case for what we have been asking for, and what we are asking for: That we should send the ACTA agreement to the European Court of Justice, to get clear and proper guidance as to how it should be implemented — if it can be implemented in a way that is compatible with fundamental rights and the acquis.
There are other things that are very interesting in this Opinion as well. In paragraph 32, it mentions ”three-strikes”, and says that three-strikes was on the table during the negotiations, but then it was removed from the negotiations.
This is very interesting, because almost exactly a year ago, on December 22, I had put a written question to the Commission, asking if three-strikes had in fact been discussed. The Commission then said that ”at no stage in the ACTA negotiations were there any proposals on the table about the direct or indirect introduction of compulsory three-strikes or graduated response systems”.
But now the Legal Opinion here says the opposite, which is in conformity with the leaks of previous draft agreements. The problem is that those draft agreements have never been released officially, so we can’t actually know who is right or wrong here.
To me, it makes sense to have all those draft agreements made public officially, because, as the Legal Service points out, the problem with the ACTA agreement as it stands now is that it is very vague. It is not at all obvious how various things should be interpreted.
One of the core aspects of the ACTA agreement is that it talks about ”cooperation” between rightholders, internet service providers, and the business community in general. In the early drafts, it was pretty clear what that cooperation meant, because then, ”three-strikes” was mentioned in a footnote, as an example of it. But then that was removed, so it becomes a bit unclear what that cooperation is supposed to mean.
And that brings us to another problem. Ms Gallo mentioned China, quite rightly, because indeed, when we are discussing whether this is a worthwhile agreement or not: It is supposed to be an anti-counterfeiting agreement, and China is not one of the signatories. Yes, one can very much ask: Is this worthwhile at all?
But going beyond that, when we are talking about China: This kind of cooperation, with private companies cooperating under the auspices of the government, is one of the big problems for European and Western companies wanting to enter into China and offer services on the internet.
So far, we have been able to at least criticize China for doing that. But if we sign an agreement actually encouraging that kind of cooperation, we would lose all our moral high ground in relation to China. I think that could be very damaging to European companies trying to enter into that market.
And as I said: What is the point of an anti-counterfeiting agreement that doesn’t include China?
To conclude: I think this Legal Opinion confirms the fact that ACTA is at best a borderline case. It depends very much on how it would be implemented, if it actually would be compatible with fundamental rights. So, I think there is a very strong case for asking for more authoritative guidance from the ECJ before we even consider giving consent to signing this agreement.

There still remains a slight hesitation in admitting that a great night has been had in Candy Bar, but things are changing. It is this takeover which a new reality series is covering on Five, along with charting the lives of the bar’s staff and regulars. Aptly named Candy Bar Girls, the series aims to follow the activities of a cross section of London lesbians, highlighting their highs and lows in the search for jobs, girlfriends (or wives) and happiness.

You can count on one hand the recent films that get adolescent sexual awakening right. If you narrow that to female adolescent sexual longings, only a few stand out. Water Lilies, made in France in 2007 about a girls’ synchronized swim team, takes pride-of-place.

Next is the Argentine XXY (2007) about an intersex 15-year-old grappling with a sexual essence. To this distinguished short list add Myriam Aziza’s intimate drama of the 12-year-old Juliette (a sublimely natural Alba Gaia Bellugi) who feels herself irresistibly drawn to her French teacher Madame Solenska. This buoyant, slimly attractive, middle-age woman is played with supreme confidence by the Portugese folk singer who bills herself as Lio.
The Evening Dress, filmed in CinemaScope and gorgeous color, is a coming-of-age movie of rare artistry and integrity; it has the ache and melancholy of youth, coupled with a feminine sensibility that acutely captures how infatuation can suddenly shift to an awful desperation. We trust the director as we once trusted the instincts of a young Francois Truffaut in his beginning films with Jean-Pierre Leaud. Aziza fully honors that trust.

Όταν το «Αttenberg» κυκλοφόρησε στις ελληνικές αίθουσες, ήταν σχεδόν αδύνατο να διαβάσεις για αυτό χωρίς να γίνει κάποια (θετική ή αρνητική) σύγκριση με τον «Κυνόδοντα», κάτι όχι εντελώς αδικαιολόγητο. Η Αθηνά Τσαγγάρη υιοθετεί μια παρόμοια ψυχρή κινηματογράφηση για ένα προσεκτικά κατασκευασμένο οπτικό αποτέλεσμα (στη διεύθυνση φωτογραφίας ο Θύμιος Μπακατάκης), μινιμάλ προσέγγιση σε σενάριο και διαλόγους με πετυχημένες δόσεις (μαύρου συνήθως) χιούμορ, και ηθελημένα μονότονη εκφορά του λόγου από τους ηθοποιούς.

Όπως και στον «Κυνόδοντα», όμως, οι επιλογές αυτές νομιμοποιούνται από την φύση της ιστορίας, με πρωταγωνίστρια μια εκκεντρική κοπέλα που εγκαταλείπει την σωματική και συναισθηματική της ακαμψία μόνο για τους παιδιάστικους χορούς με την φίλη της, ενώ νιώθει πιο άνετα να μιμείται τα ζώα παρά τους ανθρώπους.

Αυτές οι αναφορές στο ζωικό βασίλειο είναι πανταχού παρούσες, από τα ντοκιμαντέρ του Άτενμπορο που παρακολουθεί φανατικά η Μαρίνα μέχρι τις μιμήσεις ζώων στις οποίες συχνά καταφεύγει με τον πατέρα της ή τη φίλη της, Μπέλα. Είναι ένα εύρημα που λειτουργεί και σε σχέση με τον χωρίς συναισθηματισμούς και γεμάτο περιέργεια χαρακτήρα της Μαρίνας, αλλά και με αυτά που της συμβαίνουν κατά τη διάρκεια της ταινίας, μια διελκυστίνδα ανάμεσα στον θάνατο και τη ζωή όπως τα ανακαλύπτει για πρώτη φορά. Love, death, obsession and family ties motivate the characters in this offbeat drama from writer and director Athina Rachel Tsangari. Marina (Ariane Labed) is an eccentric woman in her early 20s who has few friends and is physically repulsed by men, though she isn't satisfied by sex with women. One of the few things that bring Marina happiness is a high-rise block of flats in the industrial town where she was born; while the building is plain and unexceptional, there's something about the place (built to house the workers at an aluminum processing facility) that fascinates her. The building was designed in part by Marina's father (Vangelis Mourikis), who is similarly obsessed with his own handiwork. As their love of the building brings them together, Marina becomes her father's companion and helper as he struggles through therapy for advanced cancer, with his coming death lurking on the horizon.

Often bleak, but always stylish, Break My Fall is all about the disintegrating relationship between two tragically hip London ladies. First time director Kanchi Wichmann has an astounding eye for realistic drama and offers serious talent behind the camera, painting one of the most intimate portraits of lost love the lesbian scene has ever seen.
Sally (Sophie Anderson) and Liza (Kat Redstone) are bandmates and girlfriends living smack in the middle of the queer scene in London. They live in a crappy flat and they are clearly on their last legs when we first meet them. The very first scene sees Liza wistfully pouring over old footage of happier days, a performance only a few years prior where both women are playing their hearts out and making doe eyes at one another.
Break My Fall is nothing if not incredibly stylish. Shot beautifully with handheld cameras and attractive, screwed-up people doing screwed-up things, it’s a singular meditation on sex, drugs and rock and roll as they affect our heroines. It’s equally adept at showing the intoxicating side of a life of partying and its unpleasant after effects (on bodies, on relationships, on love), and it does so without a mommy character coming in to ruin everyone’s fun – or ease their misery.
f you’re allergic to hipsters or tragic, heart-breakingly real accounts of romantic failure, you should stay away, but everyone else should give the film a shot. It’s the most honest, raw, lovingly crafted film of its kind to show up this year, and powerful enough to knock even the most stalwart viewer out of any sense of complacency. When the pack of vampires attacks a group of criminals, the police department investigates the case and hunts the women without knowing the risks that they are taking. Meanwhile the lonely Tom and the Lena fall in love with each other; but the unrequited love of Lena for Louise jeopardizes the couple.

A colorful, lush, pulpy flick, Gigola (released in 2010 in Europe) is a sensuous dive into the 1960s underground lesbian scene of Paris, by way of cabaret and high camp. It’s beautifully crafted in every way, often confusing, and incredibly sexy. Director Laure Charpentier has adapted Gigola from her own novels, with an attention to detail and love for the characters that oozes from every scene.

In the first moments of the film, we watch Georgine (Lou Doillon)’s initiation into the lesbian underground, as her lover (and school headmistress) cuts her hair short and teaches her a thing or two about forbidden love. Immediately after, we watch a slightly older Georgine (now Gigola) say goodbye to her medical school classmates and take off from the straight and narrow path. Her lover has taken her own life, and Gigola is ready for a change.

If you have a thing for all things 1960s and oh-so-French, or you fancy a romp through the fantasy life of a hyper-empowered, ultra-stylish proto sex worker, or if you simply like to look at attractive, gender-bending ladies in suits, Gigola was made to order for you. It doesn’t always make a ton of sense, but it’s one hell of an enjoyable ride regardless. Review by Afterellen.com

Albert Nobbs is a passion project for Glenn Close. The actress first starred as the cross-dressing protagonist in the Broadway play in 1982 and has wanted to turn it into a feature film ever since. After securing financing last year, it came to fruition and the final product is well worth it.

Albert Nobbs is, by all appearances, a quiet and polite servant in an Irish hotel. But what his coworkers don't know is that he's a woman. Albert saves the money he makes and stows it carefully under a floorboard in his room. His life consists of work and dreaming about owning his own tobacco shop, while concealing his true identity, the one he's successfully hidden for 30 years.

The question of this era is always this: Are they lesbians, or are they transgender? But this, of course, it not so simple. Their desire to have the lives of men does not necessarily mean they want to be men. But this also works for their desire to marry women. Perhaps they want to marry women because they are living as men, and not because they have sexual desire for them. It varies on an individual basis, which is clear in the film, as Albert and Hubert seem to have different motivations for their means of getting by. Albert is chastised by Helen for not wanting to kiss her. Hubert, on the other hand, is deeply in love with his wife and sees her as a lover as well as a partner. Albert does not seem to be romantically motivated.

These were very real issues for women in the early 20th century. Radclyffe Hall, author of The Well of Loneliness, is one of the best examples, as she preferred to dress and be seen as male. The protagonist in her novel was the same way, this being called "sexual inversion" at the time.

In a telling interview with IndieWire, McTeer said, "There were a lot of people who lived like this. One thing you have to remember in England that is different from over here is that sodomy, if you're a guy, it's illegal. You'd be kicked out of the country. There was nothing against lesbianism because Queen Victoria didn't believe it existed."

In the same interview, Close says, "Hubert is exactly who Hubert wants to be. He's fine. He's really happy. Sometimes I call him he, sometimes she… I think he thinks of himself as a him. I think he loves life. He's got a great bounce. She loves laughing, she loves flirting, she's incredibly happy."

The message behind Albert Nobbs can be summed up in this line delivered by Hubert: "Albert, you can be whoever you are." You'll just have to watch the entire film to see if that turns out to be true. Review by Afterellen.com

Circumstance (2011)

Featuring a lesbian love story between two teenagers in contemporary Iran, Circumstance is a family drama that examines the conflict between Iranian youths who yearn to express themselves — and who will go to great lengths to do so — against a repressive establishment that seeks to stamp out anything it perceives to be evil.
The story centers around the relationship between schoolgirls Atafeh (Nikohl Boosheri) and Shireen (Sarah Kazemy), both of whom were raised by well-to-do intellectuals. Their environments have somewhat sheltered them from the fundamentalist element the country, though it is evident that women are second class citizens and their upper class status doesn't make them immune from the Big Brother element in modern day Iran.
Shireen lives with her uncle — it is implied that her parents died as a result of their activities as political dissidents — and she gravitates towards Atafeh and her family to regain the closeness of the nuclear family dynamic that she lost. Shireen and Atafeh form a close friendship, and on the weekends they escape to underground parties in Tehran, held in abandoned warehouses and private apartments, where they can throw off their headscarves, drink cocktails and dance. Perusing a hidden DVD store with friends, they pick up a contraband copy of Milk and decide to dub the film into Farsi, an illegal activity that they take on with youthful exuberance.
Eventually the friendship turns romantic and, knowing that their relationship will never be accepted, the girls fantasize about escaping to Abu Dhabi, where they can dress in Western attire and go to clubs that do not need to be hidden from the prying eyes of the morality police.
Atafeh and Shireen’s relationship and Atafeh’s family dynamic are shaken when Atefeh’s wayward brother, recovering junkie Mehran (Reza Sixo Safai), is released from prison and returns home. As with many lost souls, Mehran turns to religion for structure and guidance. His addiction to drugs is transferred to his newly found religion, and his zeal increases with time and he begins to impose his values on his family, including installing a surveillance system to spy on the activities of his family and Shireen, with whom he begins to fall in love.
One night, Atafeh and Shireen are arrested for the crime of driving and smoking cigarettes while having ovaries. Atafeh’s father Firouz (Soheil Parsa) bails her out of prison, and he is warned by the fundamentalist warden that money is not enough to shield his daughter from the law and established social customs. Mehran bails Shireen out of jail, and soon afterwards, Shireen’s uncle decides that Shireen needs to be married off — with a quickness. The designated bachelor is Mehran, much to Atafeh’s dismay. Meanwhile, the authorities have become increasingly interested in Firouz’s family life, as they have befriended Mehran. As the walls close in on her, Firouz is left with fewer and fewer outlets to express her identity and Atefeh makes a drastic, life changing decision.
While Mehran’s transformation from washed out junkie to zealot feels more like a plot device, the love affair between Atafeh and Shireen is expertly written, and the chemistry between them feels authentic. The film is buoyed by a soundtrack that reflects the urgency of youth, and the club scenes are shot with dazzling color, an escape from the dreariness of everyday life. Writer and director Miriam Keshavarz has provided a complex, rare and intimate glimpse into a culture wrestling between rigid traditional values and the human desire to be free.

Viv encounters Kay Langrish, a wealthy, reclusive butch lesbian and for both women this evokes memories of 1944 when Kay was an heroic ambulance driver and Helen was Kay's girlfriend, before Kay introduced her to her ex-lover Julia. Viv had an illegal abortion, funded by Reggie, and, after she needed hospital treatment, Kay saved her from prosecution by claiming she was a married woman who had miscarried. Three years earlier Kay and Julia are still an item and Viv meets unhappily married soldier Reggie on a train. Kay pulls Helen from the wreckage of a bombed house whilst we learn why Duncan was in prison following a suicide pact with the boy he loved. As the scene returns to 1947 there are happier endings for some, not for others but there is still optimism.

Tomboy (2011)

Sure to be one of 2011's most subtly effective films, Céline Sciamma's second directorial effort, Tomboy (arriving after the well received Water Lilies), is an understated yet powerful gem of a character drama, exploring important issues of adolescent sexuality and identity with apparent skill.

The film follows 10-year-old Laure who moves into a new neighbourhood with her parents and little sister. She meets another girl from the same building who mistakes her for a boy. But instead of correcting her, Laure announces herself as Mikael and proceeds to pretend she's a boy when playing with her newfound friends.

What could have been a horribly mishandled, exploitative film is instead a quietly potent exploration of what it's like to be young and unsure of who you are. Laure (played brilliantly by newcomer Zoé Héran) is treated as a normal girl by her family but looks in the mirror constantly wondering why she doesn't look like other girls. It's both understandable and heart-breaking to see her try to be something she's not, not yet ready to accept her gender because of how she looks.

At a lean 80 minutes, Tomboy uses its time well to hit on pertinent issues and questions that are bound to arise when dealing with this sort of subject. The short runtime is actually quite a relief as these sorts of films can often drag on for far too long, the important stuff often getting lost in the mix. Writer/director Céline Sciamma knows what she's doing and doesn't waste a second getting her points across.

At once low-key yet provocative, understated yet brave, Tomboy manages to communicate to the audience in an extremely effective way without crossing the line into showiness. An impressive second feature from Sciamma, the film deals with issues of acceptance, youth identity and belonging by intelligent means.

Francine: Claire’s ex from college is a media and business executive who is just now coming into her own on the L.A. dating scene. Apparently, Francine thinks that she and Claire are “tragic” together and “doesn’t know what to make of Claire’s move.” Says Showtime’s official dossier: “She’s already on her way with a successful career and a great group of friends whose support is a welcome presence as she also grapples with whether or not to come out to her traditional Japanese mother.”

Cori & Kacy: The Culver City, Calif., duo are entertainment executives, have been together for five years (legally married for two), and are ready to start a family. They’re excited — and overwhelmed. “They have to find a donor, a doctor and figure out their insemination plan,” says their combined bio from Showtime. “Cori also has to bid adieu to her carefree party days and quit smoking. It’s an emotional journey without a roadmap.”

Sajdah: The resident of Van Nuys, Calif., is an LGBT activist and was once nominated for high school prom queen. Now, Sajdah has gone butch and is finding her way in L.A.’s lesbian world, having just moved from Washington, D.C., where she was the first of her family to graduate from college. Reads her Showtime bio: “Articulate and opinionated, Saj isn’t shy about making friends or speaking out on behalf of the gay community through activist work. Yet, the ins and outs of relationships remain a mystery for her — until she meets her first girlfriend and is forced to learn, and fast!”

As for what's happening with Whitney and Romi, EW reports that Whitney is "is making 2011 her year to re-focus on her creative passions and give back to the community" while also trying to deal with "complications with Sara." And Romi has a girlfriend that she's "struggling to be emotionally and sexually available to." It definitely looks like a different show. It is this sense of asymmetry that pervades the film’s very look and feel, from its visual richness to its beautifully evocative score and potent use of both sound and silence. Only in a film where a woman smokes a cigarette while shaving her armpits can uncertainty, enlightenment, love and fear commingle so eloquently.

A Marine Story (2010)

Standing at an awkward crossroads between a polished, high-budget film and an average, well-intended queer indie flick, A Marine Story has a bit of an identity problem, but its heart is in the right place.
The story of a tough ex-Marine (played by The Gymnast favorite Dreya Weber) kicked out under “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” and her difficult assimilation into civilian life, it deftly showcases the difficulties of women in the modern military, though the plot unfortunately goes AWOL toward the end.
The cinematography is quite excellent, and the glossy production values do much to imbue the film with a sense of realism. The Marine flashback scenes are particularly impressive, and it’s obvious that actual military advisors were used in production to ensure that things looked appropriately gung-ho.

Marine officer Alexandra is tough enough to kick any guy's ass in a bar fight, but there's one opponent she can't beat: military policy. When she returns to her conservative hometown from Iraq with a mysterious personal life, she finds herself charged with preparing a tempestuous teenage girl to boot camp.
The overall theme is particularly relevant, as this is, at its core, a scathing indictment of the United States Military’s discriminatory “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy. Alexandra is a perfect example of the damage it does – it takes good soldiers (soldiers who really want to be in the fight) and kicks them out for nothing so serious as their sexual orientation. She is punished beyond all reason for who she is – living a closeted life that includes a sham marriage and a ridiculous amount of secrecy, thrown out of the military on someone’s malicious whim – it’s a sad and unfortunately, realistic portrait of what thousands of queer soldiers are forced to endure.
Ultimately, this is the success of A Marine Story; in telling it like it is about DADT. The film suffers from its Dale subplot and awkward pacing, and it sadly can’t recover from its odd dealings in the meth lab, but the larger tale is a compelling one. The sight of Dreya Weber in uniform sweetens the deal. Review by Afterellen.com

My Normal (2010)

The very definition of an "offbeat" comedy, My Normal stars Nicole LaLiberte as Natalie, a down-to earth lesbian dominatrix who dreams of becoming a filmmaker. Light, quirky, and very playful, it's probably the only film about BDSM that you could comfortably take your mother to see.

Natalie is immediately likable. The early scenes establish her as a master of her kinky profession, while still remaining a likable, friendly, girl-next-door kind of lady. She and three of her closest friends do "sessions" where they dominate their willing, paying, male clientele. Together and individually (depending on the client's preference), they ply the trade of BDSM, then hang out and go for drinks afterward.

Whether you care to glean deeper intent or not, My Normal is clearly a movie made with love. Every element of Natalie's world is rendered with an eye for detail – everything from the sex toys, to the random dominated clients, is played for fun. (Check out the guy who serves as an ashtray.) The acting, cinematography and overall production values make this small, indie film as pleasing and scrappy as our main characters, creating a very appealing world to slip into. The overall sex-positive air of acceptance of its dominatrix characters is an alternative viewpoint, but a welcome one, especially with its gleeful dismissal of judgment and labels.

The film's final act introduces a few final twists and turns, but despite one misplaced scene among the core dominatrix friends, everything ties up quite nicely. In fact, it has one of the cleverest and satisfying final sequences in recent lesbian film memory. My Normal is about as much fun as you can have without busting out the bullwhip, and far less painful.

"My Normal" is the story of Natalie, a young lesbian from the Lower East Side, who's struggling to find a balance between her dreams of becoming a film maker and her lifestyle as a dominatrix. Her exotic looks and unconventional techniques make her one of the most desirable mistresses in the NYC underground. After befriending her weed dealer and igniting a steamy love affair with her new girl, Natalie gets an internship on a real movie set. But if everything she ever wanted is becoming a reality, why is her life falling apart? When it seems that all is lost, Natalie realizes that the only way to turn her dreams into reality is to use her unique talents as a dominatrix to get exactly what she wants. Elena Undone opens with a hazy, slow motion shot of two women walking towards each other. A voiceover dreamily states “In love, one and one are ...one. Seldom do we get to experience the art in love.” It goes on to reference Emily Bronte and the scene reveals that we’ve actually been listening to a church sermon (a not-so-subtle transition to a stained glass window is our first hint).
The acting is quite good, with both Zadegan and Dinwiddie turning in fantastic, nuanced performances – easily outshining the sometimes-iffy dialogue. Their scenes together sparkle and shine with chemistry and life, and even the mundane details (little touches, longing looks, etc.) are played just right. Kramme is also wonderful as Nash – the most realistic (and likeable) teenage boy to appear in a lesbian film since the adventurous younger brother in Better Than Chocolate.
Peyton and Elena are, on the surface, diametrically opposed - one, a well-known lesbian writer, the other a mother and wife of a pastor - but when their paths cross, several times over, they feel compelled to connect. What begins as friendship quickly blossoms into something deeper. Peyton tries to extricate herself before her heart wants what it can't have. Elena can't imagine not having Peyton in her life. And despite the fact that she has never even considered kissing a woman, Elena is overwhelmed with a desire to do just that. Despite Peyton's reservations, Elena pushes the relationship into a full-blown affair. The two women fall deeply in love, both keenly aware a future together might be little more than a dream. Sexy and offbeat, Bloomington is a fantastic little drama from writer-director Fernanda Cardoso. Smartly playing with – and even subverting - the teacher-student lesbian romance, it's a refreshing treat in a summer swimming with overdone melodramas.

Sarah Stouffer plays Jacqueline, a child star that has grown up and decided to go to college in Bloomington. She navigates the hallways and quadrangles just fine, but comes across an uncomfortable student population who alternatively fawns over her, (as big fans of Neptune 26, her cult TV series) or cast disapproving looks at the pampered ex-star.

The storyline flows naturally from the well-drawn characters, and thankfully, no eleventh-hour plot devices rear their ugly heads. Instead, what we have here is one of the rarest of films: a refreshing, unique lesbian drama that gets things "right" in every department.
The acting is excellent, the characters are compelling and thoroughly likeable, the story is unique and well told. Every aspect of the production itself (the cinematography, editing, etc.) is unobtrusive and well done. Best are the love scenes, which are numerous and genuinely exciting, without any individual sequence ever overstaying its welcome.

Another nice touch is the omnipresent, subtle humor. Jackie is more apt to roll her eyes at the little annoyances of life (figuring out how to do her own laundry, dealing with star-struck fans) than she is to freak out about them, giving us a protagonist who likes to laugh at the world. In one scene, she uses some of her old technobabble lines to seduce Catherine, cooing sci-fi nonsense while Catherine giggles and sighs.

It's clear that Bloomington was written with a tongue-in-cheek sense of snark about show business, a welcome element.
A bit under-the radar, with a tone is a slightly offbeat, Bloomington could be the sleeper hit of this season's queer festival dramas. It's sexy, it's different, and best of all, it's fun. Review by afterellen.com

Steeped in the hipster glow of Slamdance recognition (the ultimate in truly indie street cred), The Four-Faced Liar is a romantic comedy/drama for the gen Y crowd. Writer Marja Lewis Ryan adapted her own play for the screen, co-produced, and stars in the film, which features a lesbian romance at the center of its examination of 20-something relationships.

We begin with introductions all around. Trip (Todd Kubrak) is a cool, New Jersey-bred literature major that lives in a fabulously grungy New York City apartment with Bridget (Marja Lewis Ryan), an equally cool, womanizing lesbian with a real thing for Emily Bronte. In fact, we meet our heroine as she sits on a toilet, smoking a cigarette, a copy of Wuthering Heights in hand.

Along with Trip’s girlfriend Chloe (Liz Osborn), they meet a small town couple — Greg (Daniel Carlise) and Molly (Emily Peck, a dead ringer for Scarlett Johansson) at their favorite local dive, The Four Faced Liar. Greg is a buttoned-up boy-next door type who’s followed Molly out to the big city. Molly’s an equally buttoned-up lit major, though she has a curious streak that comes into play very quickly.

Greg and Trip hit it off (sadly, in a totally heterosexual way) and become best buddies, bonding over videogames and sports and such. Molly and Bridget also get along well, forging a friendship over Wuthering Heights and study sessions that soon begin to drip with sexual tension.

Molly complains about how boring and predictable Greg is, all the while making hilariously transparent (to all but Molly) passes at Bridget. Meanwhile, Greg continues to be boring, and Trip alternates between being boyfriend of the year and ignoring poor Chloe.

Everything hits the fan when Molly and Bridget’s relationship starts to heat up (and Trip cheats on his way-too-good-for-him girlfriend), causing a massive rift among the friends. Dramatic twists and turns dominate the movie’s final third, which realistically does not end with everything wrapped up in a perfect little package. Life is messy, and so are Four-Faced Liar’s young protagonists.

While the push and pull between Trip and Chloe is well done (and provides some of the biggest laughs, like when Trip pulls out an impromptu ballet routine to apologize for missing a performance), the real substance of the story is in Bridget and Molly’s not-so-platonic friendship.

The pair go from casual friends (their first conversation entails Bridget naming her conquests after days of the week, while Molly stands by, nearly dumbfounded), to lovers over the span of a fall semester. It’s familiar territory for lesbian relationships in film (the curious straight woman and the experienced lesbian “player”), but it’s done well, with an honest tone.

The script is tight, and the drama feels raw and real, thanks to excellent performances from each lead and spot-on pacing. Review by Afterellen.com

Nic and Jules are in a long term, committed, loving but by no means perfect relationship. Nic, a physician, needs to wield what she believes is control, whereas Jules, under that control, is less self-assured. The Runaways had a typical teenage dream: they wanted to be rock stars. But unlike most restless adolescents with that vague hunger, they actually came close to superstardom. That's not a story you hear every day, especially not when the musicians are female and the music is an aggressive jumble of glam, punk, and straight-ahead rock.

The rise and fall of this pioneering all-girl band is a tale worth telling, but the film The Runaways isn't quite up to the task: it misses opportunities for fun and reduces heartfelt dreams to hackneyed drama. Luckily, Kristen Stewart is more than able to fill in the gaps and remind us why we love rock 'n' roll.

The Runaways depicts the formation, first tour and subsequent unraveling of the band. To writer/director Floria Sigismondi, "band" really means guitarist Joan Jett (Stewart) and lead singer Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning) — guitarist Lita Ford (Scout Taylor-Compton) and drummer Sandy West (Stella Maeve) are minor characters, while bassist Robin (Alia Shawkat) is entirely fictional. Most group scenes, including rehearsals and concerts, are brief and focus more on each girl's interactions with controlling, crazed manager Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon) than on internal band dynamics.
Maybe the lack of focus on the band as a whole shouldn't be a surprise — after all, the screenplay is based on Cherie Currie's memoir Neon Angel: The Cherie Currie Story — but you'll be forgiven for expecting a broader view from a film that has the band's name as its title.
Instead, it's all Currie from the opening scene, and startlingly so — the first shots are a visual "cherry bomb," in the form of drops of Cherie Currie's menstrual blood falling to the ground. Cherie's not prepared for the sudden onset of womanhood, and it's the first event in a passive/reactive pattern that emerges as the film progresses. She doesn't make things happen; life happens to her.Currie doesn't even seek out the Runaways, though she does love music (especially David Bowie). The band's (male) manager Kim Fowley finds Currie in a club (Rodney Bingenheimer's ramshackle and historic English Disco, a fudging of facts but a nice nod to '70s glam culture). Cherie has just the Brigitte Bardot–esque look the band needs, at least according to Fowley. But as Kim promises to make her a star, Cherie just waits and stares. This Sunday night, the world will finally got to see the first episode of The Real L Word, brought to us by executive producers Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz of Magical Elves (Top Chef, Project Runway, Last Comic Standing) and series creator Ilene Chaiken (The L Word). Though it falls under the often dicey category of "reality" programming, the involvement of Magical Elves creates an expectation of more substantive content than one might have for similar shows, such as The Real Housewives franchise. And the fact that it's about a group of lesbians, not a group of wealthy heterosexual women, also suggests that this reality show might be a little different from the norm. The Real L Word is about sex. If you haven't figured that out from watching the preview clips, you'll get the message in the opening moments of the premiere episode. There, we are introduced to each of the six stars by way of their confessions of their first sexual experiences with other women.

Meet Rose, who doesn't remember the name of the first woman she bedded. Then there's Nikki, who was the "aggressor" in her first sexual encounter with a woman. One of the defining moments of British popular culture came in 1995 when Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy disrobed and went plunging into a lake in BBC's Pride and Prejudice. Now, 15 years later, BBC2 is giving us a lesbian answer to that sexy Victorian romance with The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister — only they've replaced the decorous Austen subtext with impossibly delicious main text.

Of course, main text is easy when your source material is a four million word diary that — once decoded — offers little gems like this:

Monday 29 January 1821 [Halifax] — I love and only love the fairer sex and thus beloved by them in turn, my heart revolts from any love but theirs.
September 1820 — Yet my manners are certainly peculiar, not all masculine but rather softly gentleman-like. I know how to please girls.
Sunday 14 September 1823 — At [first], we thought someone [was] breaking into the house but the continuance of the noises & the pattering of rain soon ushered in a tremendous thunder storm. Very vivid, fast-succeeding flashes of lightning enlightened the whole room. After some time came 1 or 2 tremendous peals of thunder & the heaviest rain I almost ever heard. In the midst of all this, we drew close together, made love & had one of the most delightfully long, tender kisses we have ever had.

The story goes like this: in nineteenth century Yorkshire wealthy orphan Anne Lister lives with an aunt and uncle, anxious for her to marry well and blissfully unaware that she is a lesbian,recording her thoughts and exploits in a coded diary. When her lover Mariana Belcombe makes a marriage of convenience to rich old Charles Lawton,she feels betrayed and,although Mariana visits and has sex with her,the relationship is going nowhere. Helped by old flame Tib she makes a play for innocent Miss Browne but sees she is barking up the wrong tree and diverts herself by renovating the family hall. The world of early 19th century England is usually seen through the eyes of Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters. Sue Perkins explores a dramatically different version of this world, as lived and recorded by the remarkable Anne Lister. Anne was born in Halifax in 1791. A Yorkshire landowner, she was a polymath, autodidact and traveller who kept a detailed diary. Running to more than 4,000,000 words, the work ranks as one of the most important journals in English literature. Parts of Anne's epic diary were written in code: once deciphered they reveal graphic details of Anne's many love affairs with women.

Sue visits Halifax's public library to explore what Anne Lister's life reveals about the society in which she lived. She meets Helena Whitbread, who spent 25 years cracking Anne's code and who was responsible for the publication of the diaries in 1988. Helena tells Sue the moving and tragic story of Marianne Belcome, the love of Anne's life. At Anne's ancestral home, Shibden Hall, Sue discovers that Regency England was surprisingly tolerant of Anne's chosen lifestyle. Dr Margaret Reynolds and Prof Amanda Vickery tell Sue that relations between young women were tacitly encouraged as a useful preparation for marriage.

Sue discovers that Anne was able to follow her sexual preferences in relative peace. It was only when she sought to profit from the Industrial Revolution by sinking a coal mine on her land that criticism of her private life became public. Anne acquired the capital for the mine from a wealthy female landowner, Anne Walker, with whom she enjoyed a relationship as close to marriage as the times would permit.

Sue finds out that what happened to Anne Lister's diaries after her death is almost as remarkable as the story of Anne's life.

The most offbeat "family road trip comedy" since Little Miss Sunshine, with as much pure, unadulterated zaniness as a John Waters film, Drool is one of the darkest and most bizarre queer comedies in recent memory. Written and directed by Nancy Kissim, the film has roots in the wacky creativity of the Slamdance film festival – and it shows.We begin with a high school girl (Tabitha, played by Ashley Duggan Smith), agreeing to an impromptu sexual act with the school jock. She’s as feisty as she is apparently promiscuous, a sort of proto-loner with a notebook full of doodles and a home life as messed-up as a real life Kelly Bundy.
Tabby narrates the entire film, beginning with a guided tour through a typical dinner with her family. Her mother, Anora (Laura Harring) is the true protagonist, a battered housewife who spends her days daydreaming about her husband – that is, if he were a better man. In real life, Cheb (Oded Fehr, best known for his role in the Mummy and Resident Evil series) is an angry, abusive, racist man who treats his wife like scum.
Tabby also has a brother — Little Pete (Christopher Newhouse), who’s a 13-year-old barely closeted gay boy who tries to butch up his image around dad. Little Pete kisses up to “Daddy” all during dinner, while Cheb just berates Anora as she sits blankly, daydreaming.
Without the twee animated sequences (Tabby’s notebook drawings come to life) or the cute and quirky soundtrack, it’d be tough to differentiate the goings-on from a terrible Lifetime “movie of the week” — there’s even a thoroughly un-sexy sex scene between Cheb and Anora (from which the film gets its title). Anora (and by extension, Tabby) lives in a rotten, downtrodden, going-nowhere world.
All of that changes when a perky African-American woman (Imogene, Jill Marie Jones) moves in next door and befriends Anora. Sporting a purple car and a wardrobe that would put RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants to shame, Imogene sells “Kathy Kay” makeup for a living and wears enough of her product to bury a small animal.
She bedazzles Anora with her beauty products and friendship (in fact, she’s actually the first friend that Tabby can recall her mother ever having). They bond over lotion and mud masks and coffee, giggling all the way. It doesn’t take long for the lovely Imogene to start replacing “fantasy Cheb” in Anora’s naughtier daydreams. Immacolata and Concetta free again, continuing the friendship born in the particular cell where they were locked. The scandalous story becomes common knowledge and Pasquale tries in vain to stop his wife, being the owner of the house where they live and the butcher that she manages the hunt. Regardless of public opinion at home brings Immaculate Concetta, easy prey to psychological crisis. The Pappalardo, however, insists Immaculate and is forced to divide his time between him and Concetta when the daughter, was paralyzed by a fall, it needs expensive care. When Immaculate claims to be pregnant, killing Concetta reacts.
The film is very explicitly a Savior Piscicelli shooting modes and narrative conventions of melodrama and film Neapolitan vein. His players come from the dialect theater, and the story is full of debts to pay, bullying to please, misfortunes that happen to the creature, pilgrimages to Montevergine. But in the midst of all this lies the scandal, the story of a love between two women, born in a prison and went outside, regardless of the people, a husband of her friends.
This is a fabulous little movie, masterfully acted and quite macabre. If you have a chance to see it, don't miss it. It may be advertised as a story of "Two Women in Love", which is its English title, however it's more than that. It's about risk taking and "doing as you are pleased" (the favourite motto of the main character) and getting whatever goes along with that. The atmosphere of an old, small Italian town in the Naples region has been convincingly recreated. Those who speak Italian will recognise the accent immediately. Erotic scenes are awesome, albeit applied in moderation. They are both exciting and convincing. At moments they are quite explicit even by today's standards, and the movie was released in 1979! A wonderful movie without stars, bells and whistles, for those open minded who are not afraid to take risks themselves.

Boogie Woogie (2009)

Based on the novel by Danny Moynihan, and relocated to London from New York, Boogie Woogie is Altman without the quality — in other words, it’s just like Prêt-a-Porter (sorry, Bob). There’s a lot going on, but nothing happening. Characters lurch to and from each other without any real reason, and the film feels poorly edited. Altman leaves viewers to make their own minds up about how certain characters interact with each other; this film leaves viewers questioning their own memory skills. Admittedly, it’s a nice change to have a British film about something other than London gangs, gritty Northerners or the nobility of Edwardian Surrey, and there are some plus points — just not very many. Danny Huston, as Art, is the standout. Sounding exactly like his father, John, Huston smiles an oily smile and laughs an insincere laugh in every scene. He’s in it for the money, but we like him. It would have been easy to make his character obnoxious, and I applaud the fact that he isn’t. Stellen Skarsgard, Joanna Lumley and Alan Cumming all play exactly the type of characters you would expect them to, Charlotte Rampling appears in one scene with eyelids slung so low I worry for her ability to see low beams, and Gillian Anderson brings her one English accent out of the closet for another airing. Poor girl, she sounds like she’s going to faint at any minute.

For all that, Boogie Woogie is not a terrible movie. It’s light, for the most part, and Huston is a delight in every scene. It just seems that satirizing something that already seems satirical to anybody not in that community is a bit like shooting fish in a barrel.

other people).Audry had to cope with problems inherent to any adaptation of a play:she succeeded quite good by using flashbacks -like Mankiewicz would do for "suddenly last summer"-,and inventing a very brilliant first scene:Alan Parker might have seen the movie,because he uses the elevator in "Angel heart" (1987)the same way Audry did in 1954.
Most of all,she's got three convincing actors,two of whom are unfortunately forgotten today (Gaby Sylvia was essentially a stage actress and Frank Villard was cast against type here:he was the tough male raider type:but convincing anyway).The third one is none other than the great Arletty:after "les enfants du paradis",like so many others who "collaborated" during the occupation -her only sin was to fall in love with a German:she said afterwards "My heart is French,but my a.. is international!"-she was blacklisted and when she could return,she was relegated to small parts -but she triumphed on the stage notably with Blanche's part in "streetcar named desire"-."Huis clos" is one of her rare leading parts after the war.She outdoes herself here ,playing lesbian Inès so intensely she's almost frightening and threatening.As historian Jean Tulard said "she was our best actress" "Huis clos" is really interesting and will reward you if you give it a chance.Three people (alive or dead no matter)tearing each others to pieces.

Chloe (2009)

Chloe is provocative not because of the sex scenes or sight of skin (which is present), but by the tension created between leading ladies Amanda Seyfried and Julianne Moore. Seyfried uses her cat eyes to deliver a seductive performance drawing attention in every frame, while Moore leads the overall demands of the film with her alluring presence and broad character depth. Neeson’s performance is impressively consistent even though his wife Natasha Richardson tragically died in a skiing accident during the film’s production.

The majority of the film is engaging and cohesive, but where Chloe gets off track is the surreal ending. In true Hitchcockian form, it’s an understatement to say that Chloe takes a quick blindsided turn and then just abruptly ends. This type of closing is a great thing in the world of Hitchcock’s canon, but Chloe left me wondering “What the hell just happened?”. I’m not into spoilers so I’ll leave it at that, but man I really could have used more substance for how it all plays out and an ending that was in bed with the first two acts.

As the film begins, we witness a fantastic sex scene between the two dissolve into a dream, as Lola’s phone interrupts her reverie. It’s Casey, and she needs Lola to pick up a set of all-important prints for a crucial business meeting with Danielle (DeBuono), who also happens to be Casey’s ex-girlfriend. Lola runs out the door — quite literally — and encounters a tragic-comedy of obstacles keeping her from being punctual the one time she needs to be.What follows is part Run Lola Run and part Groundhog Day. Lola encounters everything from her ex, to a feisty meter maid, an angry dog, a runaway subway car and the very possessive Danielle on her way to Casey’s aid. If this doesn’t sound frantic enough, keep in mind that the events have a way of occurring multiple times, with several outcomes — and that the filmmakers use a wild variety of cinematic techniques to keep things moving and shaking.Lola breaks into animated sequences every so often, depicting an exaggerated version of the live action Lola’s hilariously bad luck. These little flights of whimsy are charming and cute, if a little jarring. There is also plenty of “from the couch” footage taken of the various characters talking about their feelings, their sex lives and their relationships, all under the guise of being in therapy.

Finally, Lola’s inner thoughts are presented via photographic montages (she is a photographer, after all), with great comic effect. In one scene, after being shunned by a saucy meter maid, she imagines a series of pictures showing Lola as a dominatrix, getting her revenge on the suddenly submissive meter maid. Richard, a literary reviewer, starts receiving cryptic emails and has several ‘chance’ meetings with Sylvie. In no time, Richard, despite his having just got Lelia pregnant, develops an all-consuming obsession with Sylvie, who proves quite a tease.

Pour la première fois à la télévision, le film de Michel Royer (César 2007 du meilleur documentaire pour DANS LA PEAU DE JACQUES CHIRAC, écrit et réalisé avec Karl Zéro) se propose d'aborder la question délicate et encore taboue des rapports entre le sport et les homosexuels. Très peu de sportifs de premier plan révèlent publiquement leur homosexualité. Est-ce à dire, comme le pense encore une grande partie de l'opinion, qu'il n'y a quasiment pas de sportifs homos de haut niveau ?

La réalité est évidemment différente, et il est facile de vérifier que, même chez les simples amateurs, la plupart des sportifs homos préfèrent cacher cet aspect de leur identité à leurs dirigeants, à leurs équipiers, et au public. Des clichés éculés nourrissent toujours l'imaginaire sportif. Celui de la "folle" efféminée, modèle antisportif et repoussoir absolu chez les garçons, ou celui de la "camionneuse" hypermasculine, qui joue le même rôle chez les filles. Au coeur de toute la problématique se trouve la question des vestiaires et des douches, beaucoup de sportifs hétéros refusant l'idée de partager ces moments d'intimité avec des homos.

Dans les clubs masculins, pour inciter à l'effort et au dépassement de soi, on utilise couramment des exhortations du type "on n'est pas des pédés", "c'est pas des tirs de tapettes". Des expressions que l'on retrouve scandées dans les tribunes de certains stades, pour dénigrer les arbitres ou les équipes adverses. S'il n'y a officiellement pas d'homos dans le foot, c'est fou ce qu'on peut y trouver d'"enculés" ou de "pédés"...
Grâce aux témoignages des très rares sportifs qui acceptent de parler du sujet, le film décrit donc une situation de discrimination réelle, largement ignorée par l'opinion et peu considérée par les milieux sportifs, et de laquelle encore peu de gens acceptent de parler. Il s'intéresse à l'action et à la philosophie des clubs sportifs dits "gays et lesbiens" qui, à l'instar du Paris Foot Gay, luttent pour l'intégration des homos par la pratique sportive. Il visite plusieurs de ses clubs, filme la Coupe du monde de foot gay et présente les Gay Games, les Jeux olympiques gays.

On one warm summer evening, four very important meals are being made. In the apartment just across the courtyard, a very pregnant Shelly Hynd (Leisha Hailey)is making her best attempt at Lasagna, while her husband Chris looks on, knowing he is moments away from ordering a Pizza…and when he does, the highly hormonal Shelly is out the door and straight up the stairs to her friend Jude’s house for some comfort. Shelly finds her friend lost in her passion, and just beginning an elaborate Italian meal for she and her lover, Celia, whom they both know won’t make it home in time. And finally, there is the culinary extravaganza being prepared in front of Celia, who works on a movie set, where on that particular day, they are shooting a couple cooking, while the crew devours pizza on the side-line. Over the course of the evening, all of the cooks and the guests of the kitchen, truly experience why it is called “The heart of the house.” The discussions organically flow to a place where they are all about relationships, and they are all about truth, and desire, and no one is allowed off the hook about all that they are not saying amidst their words. Lily and Michael dance around what they want in life as they dance around the kitchen in a seductive and emotional game, that never even allows them to make it to the dining table. As Shelly unloads all of her fears of motherhood and the future of her marriage, Jude’s acceptance and knowledge of Celia’s infidelity rises to the surface without a word being said between the bruschetta and the cannoli. All the while, Chris has settled into an evening of Pizza and Adult Entertainment on DVD, and Celia has decided to reel in a young actress curious about lesbians, just for sport. …And in the end, there is no resolution, but there is hope, and there is love, and there is life, unveiled and unapologetic in La Cucina.

Produced by the masters of the Victorian drama, Merchant Ivory. Set in 1876, Boston feminist Olive (Vanessa Redgrave, If These Walls Could Talk 2, Mrs. Dalloway, Two Mothers for Zachary, Julia, "Nip/Tuck") is magnetically attracted to young Verena (Madeleine Potter), who becomes a speaker for women's suffrage. Verena moves in with the older Olive and promises never to marry, as they become very close and devote their lives to the movement. But along comes Olive's distant cousin Basil (Christopher Reeve), an anti-suffrage southern lawyer who also falls for Verena, much to Olive's dismay.

So … we have hugs and tenderness between two women and the hope that they live their lives out in that Victorian institution of the Boston Marriage. But Cousin Basil tells Verena that "it's not natural to give yourself to a movement or some morbid old maid." When it comes down to making her decision, she turns into a vapid disappointment, choosing a traditional marriage to a man who does not share her political beliefs and will not allow her to speak publicly again.

Poor Olive loses her beloved Verena, but she becomes stronger and more self confident in the end. She can do so much better - and so can we.

Linda Hunt (The Year of Living Dangerously, Waiting for the Moon) is also in the cast, in addition to Jessica Tandy (Fried Green Tomatoes) and Nancy Marchand. Redgrave was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her performance. Adapted from the classic Henry James novel of the same name. Review by lesbian-flims.com

The girl who played with fire is the second movie of the Millenium trilogy based on the books by the late Stieg Larsson. The story revolves around Mikael Blomkvist, a financial journalist at magazine Millenium who gets hired to investigate and write about a family mystery. He calls in the help of research and computer expert Lisbeth Salander and soon the two of them get caught up in all kinds of drama and violence. And this is only what happened in the first movie.

In the second part of the Millenium trilogy a big investigation by the Millenium office into the sex-trafficking industry results in two of their staff being killed, together with a lawyer and the only evidence available leads to Lisbeth Salander as a suspect. What follows is a nationwide search – or manhunt if you will – to find Salander and bring her in.

Μετά από 20 χρόνια μπροστά από την κάμερα, κι ενώ πλέον έχει και την ιδιότητα της παραγωγού, η Drew Barrymore αποφάσισε να δοκιμάσει τις δυνάμεις της σε έναν «ρόλο» που πάντα ονειρευόταν: του σκηνοθέτη.

Η πρώτη της σκηνοθετική απόπειρα, με τον τίτλο Whip it, με την ίδια και την Ellen Page – που πρωταγωνιστούσε στο Juno- στους πρωταγωνιστικούς ρόλους, έκανε παγκόσμια πρεμιέρα στο 34ο Κινηματογραφικό Φεστιβάλ του Τορόντο.

We bought (and played) into the Whip It hype from the moment Drew Barrymore secured the rights to produce and direct Shauna Cross' young adult novel, Derby Girl. The female-directed, female-scripted, predominantly female-acted film opens in the theaters today, and after catching the sneak peek last weekend I can confidently tell you that with Whip It, Barrymore didn't make any promises she couldn't keep. Whip It is a smash-and-bash, coming-of-age fairytale that is thoroughly predictable in every way, yet still manages to come off fresh. Maybe it's the infusion of rollicking feminist sentiment, or the girl-heavy soundtrack that swings easily between Tilly and the Wall and Dolly Parton. Or maybe it just feels good to occasionally watch someone get elbowed in the face on purpose.

For those of you who need a refresher: Whip It follows Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) as she lies about her age and goes against her parents' wishes to try out for a local Nowhere, TX roller derby team. Despite her tiny frame alongside women 15 years her senior, Bliss makes the team and begins leading a double life as a regular high school student by day and a a Hurl Scout by night. And oh, those Hurl Scouts! Drew Barrymore is Smashley Simpson, the klutzy ringleader. SNL's Kristen Wiig is Maggie Mayhem. Usual stunt double (heh!) Zoe Bell is Bloody Holly. And R&B star Eve is Rosa Sparks. On the opposing side you've got Juliette Lewis as Iron Maven. In what could have turned into a catty on-screen clash, Lewis delivers beautifully as a conflicted foe to Page's Bliss. When she finds out Bliss lied about her age to get into the league, she's faced with the choice of having her nemesis kicked out, or indulging a kid who reminds her of herself when she was a teenager. Ellen Page is even more affable as beauty pageant contestant-turned-wannabe Hurl Scout than she was a reluctant mother-to-be in Juno. She brings the badassery during the derby action and adds a nuanced vulnerability to the scenes with her parents (Marcia Gay Harden and Daniel Stern). And speaking of Marcia Gay Harden, she doesn't don a pair of skates, but she still almost manages to steal every scene she's in. Harden's character won't surprise you — you've seen her in every sports film from Bend it Like Beckham to Rudy — but she will make you believe her struggle to do what's best for her daughter.

The two places Whip It strays are with Bliss' romance with Oliver (Landon Pigg) and the wink-to-the-male-audience way the girl/girl scenes play out. Too much screen time is sacrificed watching Bliss try to navigate her way through her potential relationship with the enigmatic musician. It's not that it's a bad subplot, but it's a waste not to see further development in the women's lives, especially when there is such great camaraderie among the super talented female cast of characters. here may be nothing particularly new about Whip It's formula, but it's got enough laughs and "awws" and grrrl-powered fun to easily make it worth your time. In fact, it may be the quickest two hours I've ever spent in a theater.

I almost always agree with Willy Wonka, and in this case he seems to be especially right: "If the good Lord had intended us to walk, he wouldn't have invented roller skates." Who's planning to see Whip It? review by AfterEllen.com

This 2005 made for TV German movie is quite an attention grabber because very good acting by both leads, Ulike Folkerts that plays Mona and Barbara Rudnik that plays Johanna.

The movie tells the story of Mona being assigned as the bodyguard to European politician Johanna Sieber who has a strong position against European Union subsidies to the tobacco industry and becomes a victim of threats. All is complicated when those trying to kill Johanna contact Mona and blackmail her into giving information and facilitate the assassination of Johanna or otherwise they will kill her teenage son. But Mona and Johanna fall for each other and Mona becomes totally troubled and has a hard time trying to save both her loved Johanna and her loved son.

Not a masterpiece but the very nice acting makes this TV movie easier to watch than the American made for TV movie Trapped! that has a similar plot but is terribly acted.

Kick is an Australian television comedy that was first broadcast on 9 June 2007 on SBS TV. It is set in Brunswick in Melbourne, Australia. Layla is a university student arranged to be married to Sharif, but everything changes when Layla falls for fellow fencer Jackie.

Torres with an exploration of his own narrative obsessions as director and his work as producer of many Spanish independent or experimental films. In the film he is supposed to be dead and many of his friends and colleagues in real life (mostly film directors, screenwriters and actresses) appear as themselves and talk with a (fictitious) daughter of the director who is investigating his father's past. The daughter is played by excellent and beautiful actress Karme Màlaga (also in "La vida abysmal" / "Life on the edge") and her investigation begins when she finds her father's old films. Self-reference, metalanguage and reflections on the nature of cinematographic narrative (and on the drawbacks of human relationships) make this film unconventional and interesting. The main characters are the daughter, her boyfriend Fabrizio (Carlo d'Ursi, actor and producer in "Unione Europea") and the beautiful young woman she meets during her research (Ariadna Cabrol, actress in "Perfume: the Story of a Murderer", "Joves"/"Youth", "Estocolm" and the Catalan hit TV series "Porca Misèria").

On the trip, Wai worries over her boyfriend, trying to find love, and Foon reminisces about her devoted and tender care of Wan through the trials of her life, and loving her even these many years later. Wan also loved Foon in a romantic sense, becoming jealous when Foon fell in love with a local fisherman, and wishing for more between them.

They only become closer after tragedy befalls them both in different ways, finding that their love endures more than their relationships with men. Finally they make a life together, and we see them kiss in a beautiful scene conveying such strong emotion. Their joy still exists years later after being separated by war. Their reunion is sweet, containing a surprise twist at the end.

Both Liu and Lee were nominated for Hong Kong Film Awards. It's a tender romance, and a fine movie with high drama. Review by lesbian-films.com

Although he never approaches her directly, he follows her and increasingly feels to be telepathically connected to her, because she reminds him of his daughter he never met. After he led a blind artist, Catherine's truly beloved spouse, into a bus accident, she makes a living by bank robbery with young Betty till Betty gets shot. Alone again, Catherine leads a sad, uneventful life as a waitress, when she meets her follower.

Mortelle Randonnée is arguably one of France's best noir ever. And one of Isabelle Adjani's brightest hour. You unfortunately have to understand french to fully appreciate Michel Audiard's brilliant, darkly humorous dialogs (and especially Serreault's monologues). Claude Miller's direction is at once classy and precise (very similar to his work on L'Accompagnatrice), while Pierre Lhomme's cinematography is lush when needed, gritty when necessary (mainly during the last third). I read a few bad reviews here and there and I must add, and I know I'm not the first, that the States version, not only the recent DVD but also the TV version and the old VHS, well, has always been the truncated, 95 min. cut. Now, the movie showed everywhere else in the world runs 120 min. sharp. Think about it: it doesn't only mean that almost quarter of the movie is absent, it also means that the editing, fatally, is different, so is the rhythm, the feel, the movie altogether. I saw the DVD and frankly, while the transfer's OK, it doesn't make much of an impression, but then again, think that almost half an hour's gone. I never understood that thing with American distributors and foreign films, as if American moviegoers needed shorter, tighter movies so it won't be too much of a shock. That's ridiculous. Any moviegoer, American or whatever, that goes to the theater and buys a ticket for an Adjani/Serreault movie is obviously not looking for The Rock or Paul Walker. Well, that's what I think anyway.

Cheryl is young, Black, and lesbian, working in Philadelphia with her best friend Tamara and consumed by a film project: to make a video about her search for a Black actress from Philly who appeared in films in the 30s and was known as the Watermelon Woman. Following various leads, Cheryl discovers the Watermelon Woman's stage name and real name and surmises that the actress had a long affair with Martha Page, a White woman and one of Hollywood's few female directors. As she's discovering these things, Cheryl becomes involved with Diana, who's also White. The affair strains Cheryl's friendship with Tamara. More discoveries bring Cheryl (and us, her audience) to new realizations.

Tomas (Pablo Macaya) and Helena (Tamara Garea) are a young couple from Chile who are spending the summer in Barcelona. While they love the city, it isn't long before they suspect they haven't chosen a good time to visit; a brutal heat wave sets in, and Tomas is wrestling with writer's block as he works on a proposal for a new self-help book. In the midst of a tense situation, Tomas and Helena are visited by Sandra (Andrea Garcia-Huidobro), who has troubling news. Sandra has been dating Helena's younger brother Jordi (Alex Brendemuhl), but he was involved in an accident while diving from a cliff, and no one has seen him since. The couple welcome Sandra into their home as she and Helena try to find out what has become of Jordi, but it isn't long before Tomas finds himself strongly attracted to Sandra, and in time Helena is also drawn to the younger woman's charms. 199 Recetas Para Ser Feliz (aka 199 Tips To Be Happy) was an official selection at the 2009 Rotterdam International Film Festival.

If Sarno set out to make an erotic film that rivaled Bergman, he could not have done a better job. The acting by the entire cast is excellent - none of these actors seem to have been in any other Sarno film. While the indoor scenes were shot in studio, the exteriors were shot on Swedish farmland in the middle of a very harsh winter, and the endless snowfalls and cold adds an even more claustrophobic feeling to a film that, from the start, is rife with tension and uneasiness. Although I haven't gone into very much detail about the plot, there isn't much more to tell, just a true-to-life story of family tensions that are probably all-too-real and could be going on today in any home in your neighborhood. Once again Sarno proves he can make an intelligent, erotic, respectable film that deserves its re-release.

Two women form a special bond in a working-class British town shortly after World War II in this drama. Ellen Hardy (Barbara Marten) is a housewife and mother living in a dark and dingy industrial town in the North of England. Her husband Geoff (Andrew Dunn) is unsophisticated and uncommunicative, but Ellen dotes on Victor (Edward Woodcock), her ten-year-old son who displays a real talent for painting and sketching. Ellen is introduced to Kathy Thompson (Andrina Carroll), who teaches art at Victor's school, and the two women soon strike up a friendship. As they get to know one another better, Ellen and Kathy become aware that their feelings go beyond simple friendship, but they both live in a time and place that makes it difficult from them to act upon their desires. Produced for British television, Between Two Women was the first feature-length film from writer and director Steven Woodcock.

This jewel of a film is strictly for romantics. The film is a quiet character study of a woman who finds the courage to open herself to the possibilities of love and happiness. After a lifetime of repression and fear of disappointing family, the lead character can no longer deny the intense feelings that have developed between herself and her son's schoolteacher, and finally allows herself to experience what she really wants. Magnificent acting highlighted this beautiful story.
