The Candy Bar is an iconic Soho drinking hole which attracts young
hard-working lesbians searching for like-minded people who are looking
for fun, laughter and love. This new reality show follows a group of
London based lesbians attending the bar.
Candy – the Bar where everybody knows your bra size. And it isn’t
from clever guesswork, trust me. The gay scene is notorious for its
incestuous nature, and Candy Bar is central to the women’s hub. Every
week, it plays host to a mixture of committed regulars and curious
tourists who often like to pretend they simply stumbled in, unaware of
its intended clientele. Sure you did. This makes for a strange
atmosphere; a tense combination of ravenous sexuality and terrified
timidity, the only solution to which is to down countless shots and
attempt some amateur pole dancing. Apologies for that, by the way.
Until recently, admitting that one had spent an evening in Candy Bar
was something you could only utter in hushed tones, while adopting an
expression of apologetic embarrassment. However, since being taken over
by Gary Henshaw, who is well trained in gay bar ownership, the bar has
had a sparkly new makeover which seems to have attracted a different
crowd. There still remains a slight hesitation in admitting that a great
night has been had in Candy Bar, but things are changing. It is this
takeover which a new reality series is covering on Five, along with
charting the lives of the bar’s staff and regulars. Aptly named Candy Bar Girls,
the series aims to follow the activities of a cross section of London
lesbians, highlighting their highs and lows in the search for jobs,
girlfriends (or wives) and happiness.
